Nam Siu is the WDFW Area Habitat Biologist protecting fish and wildlife habitats in North Kitsap and East Jefferson Counties. He’s primary responsibilities include implementation of state laws to regulate land-use and construction activities that may impact the waters of the state, review of forestry activities in or near streams, review and comment on local government critical areas and shoreline permitting processes, as well as work with other agencies and nonprofit organizations to plan and facilitate restoration projects. Before working for WDFW, Nam was an environmental consultant and scientific diver specializing in subaquatic vegetation surveys. He also worked several seasons as a science manager aboard the research vessel Nautilus conducting deep sea mapping and research using remotely operated submersibles for the Ocean Exploration Trust. Nam is a marine biologist and oceanographer by training, he holds a M.Sc. in biology (with oceanography emphasis), and a dual B.Sc. in marine science and biology. However at heart, Nam is a naturalist curious about all things in nature, but he is especially fond of marine vegetation such as seagrasses, seaweeds, and kelp.
Nam will discuss the life history and ecology of various seagrasses, seaweeds, and kelp found locally in the nearshore of Washington’s coastlines as well as share interesting science stories about them and how to identify common species!
